British summers are a gamble. Even in a good year, you might get a handful of properly hot days, cool nights that dip below 10°C, and long spells of grey cloud. Melons evolved in warm, sunny regions with long growing seasons. They need heat, light and time. In the UK, the season is short, so you cannot afford to waste weeks on a variety that sulks in cool weather. Variety selection is the single most important decision you will make. Choose an early, reliable type that ripens in 70–85 days rather than 100–120 days. Look for descriptions like “early”, “short season”, “cool tolerant” or “suitable for northern gardens”. If a variety is described as needing a long, hot summer, leave it for the greenhouse or skip it altogether.
These varieties have earned their place in British gardens because they set fruit quickly and ripen reliably even when the sun is shy. Petit Gris de Rennes is a classic French cantaloupe that ripens in about 75 days. It produces small, aromatic fruits with deep orange flesh and a thin, green-grey skin. Blanche de Beaumont is even earlier, often ready in 65–70 days. The fruits are small, round and crisp, with pale green flesh that sweetens nicely. Sivan is a green-fleshed variety that tolerates cooler nights better than most. It ripens in around 80 days and has a mild, honey-like flavour. Sweetheart is an F1 hybrid cantaloupe that matures in 70–75 days and produces uniform, sweet fruits. Emir is a Galia-type that crops well under cover and ripens in about 75 days. Magenta is another early cantaloupe with good disease resistance. Avoid late varieties like honeydew or large watermelons unless you have a heated greenhouse. They will rarely ripen outdoors in the UK.
Start seeds indoors in late April or early May in 7cm pots filled with seed compost. Use a heated propagator or a warm windowsill. Melon seeds need 20–25°C to germinate. Once seedlings have two true leaves, pot them on into 12cm pots. Harden them off gradually. Plant out in late May or early June, once all risk of frost has passed. Choose the sunniest, most sheltered spot in the garden. A south-facing wall, a polytunnel or a greenhouse is ideal. Improve the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. Plant through black plastic mulch to warm the soil and suppress weeds. Space plants 60–90cm apart. Train them vertically up a sturdy cane or netting to save space and improve air flow. Pinch out the growing tip after four or five leaves to encourage side shoots. Once side shoots have two leaves, pinch out their tips too. This concentrates energy into fruit. Water consistently, ideally with a drip line or soaker hose. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent mildew. Feed with a high-potash tomato feed every two weeks once flowers appear. Hand pollinate female flowers (which have a tiny fruit behind the petals) using a male flower. Do this in the morning. Limit each plant to three or four fruits so the remaining ones size up and ripen properly.
Knowing when to harvest is tricky. Melons can ripen off the vine, but flavour is best if they ripen fully on the plant. Check the tendril nearest the fruit. When it dries and turns brown, the melon is usually ready. For cantaloupes, the skin turns from green to beige or orange and the fruit smells sweet. Galia types turn yellow. The blossom end should give slightly when pressed. If in doubt, lift the fruit gently. If it separates easily from the vine, it is ripe. In a cool summer, you may need to finish ripening indoors. Place the fruit on a sunny windowsill for a few days. Check daily for softness and aroma. Do not refrigerate before ripening, as cold stops the process. Once ripe, eat within a few days. Store at room temperature for the best flavour.
Fresh, ripe melon is a treat on its own. For a simple starter, wrap wedges in prosciutto or Parma ham. Add cubes to salads with feta, mint and a squeeze of lime. Blend with ice and a little honey for a refreshing sorbet. Overripe melon makes excellent smoothies or fruit leather. Underripe melon can be pickled with vinegar, sugar and spices, or turned into chutney. You can also freeze melon chunks for later smoothies. Save seeds from open-pollinated varieties like Petit Gris de Rennes if you want to grow them again. Wash and dry the seeds, then store in a cool, dark place.
Pumpkins and squash face the same challenge: short seasons and cool nights. Choose early varieties such as Uchiki Kuri (also called Red Kuri), which ripens in 90–100 days, or Cornell’s Bush Delicata, ready in about 85 days. For butternut, look for early types like Hunter or Waltham, but be prepared to start them indoors in April. Grow them as you would melons: rich soil, plenty of water, and a sunny spot. Harvest when the skin is hard and the stalk cracks. Cure them in the sun for ten days, then store in a cool, dry, frost-free place. They will keep for months. Roast, soup, curry or pie them. The same principles apply: early varieties, warm soil, and a little patience.
Training melon vines upwards saves space and improves airflow. Use sturdy canes or wires, tying stems gently as they grow.

Melons need consistent moisture, especially when flowering and swelling fruit. Water deeply at the base and avoid soaking the leaves.
